fallback

A cheaper or degraded path taken when the primary one fails or is over budget.

An alternative response path used when the primary fails, times out, or exceeds budget — a smaller model, a cached answer, or a static default. Confusions: a fallback is a deliberate degraded result, not an error, and it must be observable so silent degradation does not hide an outage.
